July – Healing Unresolved Grief: Week 2
A question for your week… 🔥
Here’s something that often surprises people when they look at it honestly: grief doesn’t move when we push against it. It moves when we stop resisting it.
Most of us have some version of a rule about how long grief is supposed to last — and a fairly strong internal alarm that activates when we feel we’ve exceeded the permitted time. I should be over this by now. It was a long time ago. Other people have been through worse.
These aren’t measured assessments. They’re defences. Ways of managing the discomfort of still carrying something we haven’t fully processed — by deciding we shouldn’t be carrying it rather than by actually setting it down.
Grief tends to be patient. It tends to wait. And it tends to resurface — sometimes years later, in unexpected circumstances, triggered by something that seems unrelated — precisely because it never got to complete its natural movement the first time.
For people doing genuine inner work, this is often one of the most significant discoveries: that some of what’s affecting us now isn’t new. It’s old, unfinished grief in a new costume.
This week’s prompt:
Have you ever experienced grief resurfacing long after an event — showing up when you didn’t expect it, or in a situation that seemed unrelated? What does that tell you about what it might still need?
Share what feels comfortable. This one often opens something unexpected. 💛
