Something to sit with this week… 🔥

Most of us, if we’re honest, have a fairly specific relationship with our inner critic. We know the topics it favours. We recognise the tone. We could probably predict, with some accuracy, exactly what it will say in any given situation.

What’s less often explored is the question of what that voice is actually trying to do.

Because the inner critic is almost never simply malicious. It developed for reasons — usually good ones, at the time. It learned that if it criticised you first, others couldn’t hurt you with the same criticism. Or that if it kept you small, you wouldn’t risk failure. Or that if it drove you hard enough, you’d be safe from rejection, from inadequacy, from the thing you most feared being true about yourself.

Understanding the function of self-criticism — what it’s been protecting, what it’s been trying to secure — is far more useful than simply trying to replace it with something kinder. Because without that understanding, the kindness tends not to stick.

    This week’s prompt:

When your inner critic shows up most — what is it actually trying to protect you from? And is that protection still something you need, or has it outlived its usefulness?

Share as much or as little as feels right. This one is worth sitting with slowly. 💛
