June – Radical Self-Compassion: Week 2
A question for your week… 🔥
Here’s an experiment worth trying this week — not as a technique, but as a genuine inquiry.
Think of something you’ve been criticising yourself for recently. Something specific. Something the inner critic returns to with some frequency.
Now imagine a person you genuinely care about — a close friend, someone you love — coming to you with exactly the same situation. They’ve done the same thing, made the same mistake, found themselves in the same place.
What would you actually say to them?
Most of us can answer that question quite easily. We’d be kind. We’d offer context. We’d remind them that one moment doesn’t define everything. We’d be genuinely interested in helping them move forward rather than making them feel worse.
The observation isn’t new — many people have encountered this exercise. What’s worth sitting with is the gap itself. Not just that it exists, but what it tells us about the different standards we hold for ourselves versus the people we love. And what it would actually mean — at a felt level, not just intellectually — to start closing that gap.
This week’s prompt:
What’s the gap like between how you’d speak to someone you love about their mistakes and how you actually speak to yourself? And what do you think maintains that gap — what would have to shift for it to close?
Share what feels comfortable. The most useful reflections here are often the most honest ones. 💛
