June – Radical Self-Compassion: Week 3
Something to explore this week… 🔥
One of the most persistent myths about self-compassion — especially among high-achieving, growth-oriented people — is that it will make them soft. That if they stop being hard on themselves, they’ll stop trying. That self-criticism is what drives performance, and removing it will remove the drive.
The research doesn’t support this. And lived experience tends not to either, once people are honest about it.
Because what does self-criticism actually do in practice? For most of us, it doesn’t produce better outcomes. It produces anxiety, avoidance, shame spirals, and a significant amount of wasted energy that could have gone toward actually solving the problem or doing the work.
The people who consistently perform well, who take genuine risks, who keep going after failure — they tend not to be the harshest on themselves. They tend to be the most able to acknowledge what went wrong, learn from it quickly, and move forward without getting stuck in it.
Self-compassion isn’t softness. It’s efficiency. It’s the ability to process difficulty without being derailed by it.
This week’s prompt:
Is there an area of your life where you’ve been convinced that being harder on yourself produces better results — and when you look honestly, does the evidence actually support that? What might a more compassionate approach to that same area produce?
Share what feels right. This one often surfaces something worth sitting with. 💛
